As I said, I was on SP this week and it was raining out in my vacation spot today, so I had nothing to do and, in the mood for baseball, decided to look at the old Fire Joe Morgan archives (I know, kind of pathetic. And if you're wondering why I'm up at 5 AM, it's b/c I'm leaving this morning) Anyway, I came across this: www.firejoemorgan.com/2007/02/were-back-and-it-feels-so-good.htmlBasically, before the 2007 season, I think it was, Ozzie Guillen was convinced he needed a new strategy offensively, even though his team was 3rd in runs scored in '06, not seeming the realize the pitching's decline was the reason for Chicago's poor '06 season. So, he implored small-ball. Now, we all know Ozzie's a nut and a headcase, but is he really this stupid? I know it's a very old example, but it seems difficult to imagine that he's stayed Chicago's manager this long without even realizing his team's strengths and weaknesses

Interesting question. The White Sox were last in Runs, BA, OBP, and 12th in SLG in 07. A lot of guys who had good years in 06 had bad years in 07. But I wonder if him trying to change their offensive approach contributed to their huge drop in production.

Ozzie likes to play small ball with a lineup of home run hitters.
Yeah, I think he's pretty stupid.

but it seems difficult to imagine that he's stayed Chicago's manager this long without even realizing his team's strengths and weaknesses It helps when your team's GM and owner are blindly loyal to you.

Injuries really hurt the Sox in 07 and 06 was not a bad season, they won 90 games.

Kenny Williams makes trades. It's pretty much all he does.

Managers, in no circumstances, should be deciding trades or FA signings. It's just the way I feel, ever since I read the book Moneyball. The GM puts the team together and decides which way he wants them to play, in my opinion. Can you imagine Ozzie making transactions?

Ozzie would have given Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan away for nothing.

and he would have traded Nick Swisher for David Eckstein (I don't know how he'd trade for a FA, don't ask)
