The Seattle Mariners have made several deals to improve the overall health of their organization and to try to make them competitive. Going into the season, the Mariners knew that they needed to get rid of some bad contracts made by the previous GM, so they had to unload some prospects in order to make sure they would be in a position to sign needed players later on. The Mariners were able to acheive these goals, and have improved every week, to a point where even after starting 15-32, they are now only 5.5 games out of first place in a weak AL West division.
"We think we have a chance to make a run at the division." GM Monkeyman said. "I'm very proud of the way our team has pulled through adversity and been competitive."
The first trade was to get rid of Carlos Silva, who was widely considered the most overpaid pitcher in the league. The Mariners parted with prospects Phillipe Aumont and Carlos Triunfel to make this happen.
A second trade was a three way trade with Cleveland and the Chicago Cubs, the Mariners parted with prospects Brandon Morrow, Michael Sanders and Greg Haulman to get rid of the contracts of Kenji Johjima and Jerrad Washburn. The mariners received a quality catcher in Geoveony Soto in the deal.
The third trade the Mariners have made sent 3B Adrien Beltre to Detroit for outfielder Magglio Ordonez. Ordonez is batting .380 for the year and has been a valuable contribution to the team.
Other suprises this year are Ken Griffey Jr, who is batting nearly .300 and has 16 HR through mid June, and Pedro Martinez, who is 3-1 with an ERA under 3.00 in his first month with the team since signing as a free agent.
"Barring any tragic injuries, we have some pitching depth and offence, and I think we have a real shot at making the playoffs." Monkeyman touted. "We're all crossing our fingers in Seattle."
