A true ace obviously has to be your best starter. He's the guy that you can rely on to stop a losing streak, prolong a winning streak, or step up in a big game. He's the guy that has the ability to pitch at least 7 innings every game he goes out there. He can be relied on to get out of tough situations. He needs to be a leader to the other guys in the rotation, and give confidence to the rest of the team behind him. Opposing batters should fear him, not necessarily because of velocity. A good ace isn't some guy that goes out and throws 100 mph every time. It has to be a guy that outsmarts batters, gets them back on their heels, and keeps in control of the game.
Some good examples today are Johan Santana, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Zambrano, and Chris Carpenter.
One of the best aces in Cardinal History is Bob Gibson. He was the definition of ace.

yeah im sure zambrano and santana are studies of the game, they just rare back and throw heat with excellent stuff, they are in no league when it comes to studying batters like a Mussina or a Halladay

Santana is worlds above any pitcher that is playing today. The guy wins at home like no other pitcher, keeps up the best stats of any pitcher, and gives his team confidence.
Zambrano was maybe a bad example simply because he can be a headcase sometimes. That was a reason I left out Jake Peavy.

Are we still doing the uneven division argument?

santana has the best stuff, and is a top ace, but how long till his arm burns out? He is Randy Johnson of old, just shorter, an excellent STRIKEOUT pitcher, that gets alot of run support

Topic: Uneven Division: Should there be something that should be done to make each division even? AL total teams 14 NL total teams 16 AL West Division 4 NL Central Division 6 This can be unfair as teams from the AL West Division as a better chance winning a playoff spot then a team from the NL Central Division. So is there anything that can be do about it? Like adding more teams to the MLB or reformatting it. Give me your best shot.

I don't think that anything should be changed now. It's a major change to put an entire organization into a different league. It would have to be a NL Central team going to the AL West. What team would be able to do that? You can't take storied franchises like the Cubs and Cardinals out of the division that they have been in for so long, and move them to a different league. The Cardinals and Cubs have one of the biggest rivalries in sports, you can't mess with that by moving one of them to a different division. If any team would go, it would probably be the Brewers.
It was stupid to have uneven divisions in the first place, but I don't think that it's worth changing now. It would be way too complicated to deal with, and people are finally getting used to how the divisions are set up.

Divisions – I think all divisions should be equalized, not only by the amount in every division but also by skill level, like come on, it would be far more relative to break up the American League east and add/subtract from the NL east, this would be a big, bold move, but I think it is nescasary to have level divisions, mixing the NL east with the AL east would be the biggest concern because the divisions are always the same competitively, leveling those two divisions to skill level will make things far more interesting, meaning – put the mets, yankees, red sox, braves and phillies all in the same division, then have the jays, rays, orioles, nationals and marlins in the other division, this would make things far more interesting and instead of having the same teams end up in the post season there will be far more competitive divisions. ALL DIVISIONS SHOULD HAVE EQUAL AMOUNTS, or else its just unfair, the divison games dont add up, your playing the same team over an over again every week, how fun is that for the fans?
